Make Up For Ever HD Microperfecting Primer in #1 Green: Review and Swatches

Make Up For Ever HD High Definition Microperfecting Primer in #1 Green ($32)
What it is:
A lightweight, oil-free complexion corrector that enhances the skin's texture and primes the skin for makeup application.

What it does:
HD Microperfecting Primer deeply nourishes, moisturizes, and softens the skin, creating a glowing effect. Creates a protective layer on the skin allowing foundation to glide on easily and last longer.

Make Up For Ever's HD Microperfecting Primer comes in a range of 7 shades that run the gamut from pink and mauve to green and blue and is an all around great primer for the price. Your 1.01 oz of primer comes packaged in an attractive double-walled slim plastic tube that takes up little space on your already cramped vanity yet really packs a punch.

Shade 1 (green) minimizes redness and is supposedly ideal for those with rosacea. I've become accustomed to green primers being a pretty shade of mint green, so was surprised to see the rather unappealing shade of darker swamp green that this primer came in. But hey it works so who am I to complain?

I shot a wider surface area than usual so you can see the difference in redness before and after.

Redness Minimized? Well here's the thing. Have you ever found a green color-correcting product that 100% fixed your redness? I thought not and this is no exception. The green HD primer gets rid of I'd say 20-30% of your redness on its own, but the real magic happens when you apply foundation over this. I usually apply foundation all over my face and then go back to my cheeks and apply 1-3 more layers of foundation to mask the redness (depending on the day/foundation), but using the HD primer I didn't feel the need to go back at all.

The Good: I purchased Make Up Forever's HD primer primarily because it sounded like it was pretty great for my skin. Check out the list of active ingredients!

Active Ingredients:
-Argatensyl: Immediately smoothes and enhances the skin's surface.
-Silica micro balls & Elastomer silicone: Give a soft finish to the skin.
-D-Panthenol & Glycerin: Provide optimal skin hydration. (+60%)
- Phycosaccharide: Creates a shield that protects from external aggressions and brings stability to the makeup.

When I wear this my skin feels balanced and looks wonderfully smooth. Unlike most primers I've tried, the HD primer really creates a beautiful canvas for my foundation to glide over and I really do see a difference. Plus it's light, fast absorbing, non-irritating and hasn't broken me out!

The Not So Great: I actually just exchanged the green for the blue because based on MUFE's primer shade suggestions (on their site here) the blue just seems better suited for my skintone. Well that and the fact that I was convinced that the green left just the tiniest hint of a greenish cast to my complexion. But I'm still not certain whether or not this was my imagination. Check out the photo down below and tell me if it looks green please!

One other complaint I've heard from people is with regards to the scent. It took me a few minutes to place the scent, but it smells exactly like Pert Plus! I actually quite like the scent as it stirs up fond childhood memories, but I do no many aren't too crazy about it.

And one last little quibble--this isn't really the ideal primer for controlling excess oilies. While MUFE's HD Primer does help my foundation color to stay truer longer, I'd say that it does very little in the controlling-oil department--but that's what a good powder is for!

Redness smoothed away! And see the difference in texture?

The Verdict: This is one of my favorite primers at the moment and I can quite possibly see myself repurchasing (in a different shade), which would be a primer first!

OMG @ Pert Plus! LOL! I remember that... definitely brings back childhood memories!

You need to do a review on the blue next. I think I see a slight greenish tint left on your hand (towards the top?). Do you get a left over blue-ish tint with the new one? Your review means I should give the primer a shot when it arrives. Did it break you out or anything?

Even though it doesn't control oil, does it produce more? Or are you still the same?

wooo... sounds like a great primer! I'd love to give this a try. I wonder what color would suit me :-/

Nicole I remember that my mom used to wash my hair with the Pert Plus 2-in-1 shampoo plus conditioner lol!

I haven't had a chance to try the blue yet, but from trying it out on my hand in store I think that it almost completely disappears. The blue is almost white and so if anything it would leave a white-ish cast.

No breakouts from the primer and it made my skin really soft!

And I wouldn't say that it produced any more oil. My skin's dryer in the winter so it's not producing as much oil as of late thanks to the colder weather, so i didn't have any oil slick issues or anything like that.

Connie the mauve or pink might be good matches for you--they brighten up the complexion and I think would work well for your skintone since it doesn't look like you have any redness issues!

I am one of those persons who could not get over that scent...

it is good to know that you link the scent with happy childhood memories!!! I have a foundation that smells like the Ultima II Wonderwear foundation I wore in the 1990s, and it really reminds me of the good times clubbing and being carefree.

Thanks for the review :) I'm mac c35/nc30 or Chanel tender bisque..do you think the green one will work for me? sorry if its out of topic..i really in need of a good primer :(

*Jen* said on November 13, 2008 at 1:11 PM

Birkinbagbeauty the scent is a decently heavy presence so if you hate the scent I can see how it would really be bothersome!

It's funny how some people hate certain scents and others love them!

*Jen* said on November 13, 2008 at 1:15 PM

Hey BeautyJunkie!

I think the green could definitely work for you! I found it a tad dark for my NW 15/20 complexion and it's not the type of product that would leave a white-ish or pale cast so I think it could work for a really large range of skintones.

Not off topic at all! =) What are you looking for your primer to do? I've been on a bit of a primer kick lately so I've been testing a bunch!

Hey Jojoba!

I can't wait to hear your thoughts on these when/if you get them in stock! They're really pretty great and I'm liking them a lot. My first MUFE purchases!

I am not sure if I see any green tint on the after pic or not. Overall, it looks fine. I looked closely at the pic and even compared with the before pic, but I can't say I am 100% positive that I saw green tint or not. However, if you believe you look green, it's better to exchange for a different shade. Even if everyone I knew said I didn't look green, nothing would convince me otherwise if I honestly believed I looked green.
Otherwise, it seems like a great product. You skin in the after pic does look much smoother and more even-toned. I wish I had a Sephora near by, so I could try it. I have no clue what shade I would get without testing a few.

Thanks for the input Deb! I know that even if my face did have a greenish tinge it would be imperceptible to anybody but me, but just thinking it would annoy me!

It is all around a great product though! It sucks there's so Sephora near you! I love to pop in for hassle-free testing of new products.

i should've picked this up when they had the F&F at sephora... but the blue version. The MUA actually recommended that to me to help brighten up my face.

oh well maybe I dont need it??? I'm just trying to make myself feel better here LOL.

*Jen* said on November 13, 2008 at 7:58 PM

Hey Anne!

I actually exchanged this green one the other day for the blue version because I felt that that would work better for my skintone, although I was liking the green one quite a bit.

I love your blog by the way I check it out all the time!

LOL I'm sure you don't need this! =P

I admit, it looks a bit green to me. I checked out their website, too, and it suggested green or neutral for my skin, not blue, probably because I'm uber pale and have cool pink undertones as opposed to yellow/orange.

If anyone doesn't know how to work out which colours neutralise each other, it's easy. Opposite colours neutralise one another, and the opposite of any secondary colour is the primary colour that doesn't make it. So...

Orange is red and yellow, thus blue is its opposite, and cancels it out.
Purple is red and blue, so yellow is the opposite.
And green is yellow and blue, so red is the opposite.

Opposite colours also naturally complement each other when you're choosing colour schemes! ^__^

Thanks for the color lesson Ana! Hopefully the blue works out even better for me than the green did, since I liked the green =D

It doesn't look green, it's just odd to see your skin which normally has redness suddenly lacking it, haha. When I use green concealer I suddenly look ridiculously sallow and pale because all the 'excess' color has been neutralized in my skin. To create my corpse makeup for halloween I actually used an excess of green primer to achieve the pale corpse-face haha.

*Jen* said on November 14, 2008 at 9:00 AM

Hey Alyson!

Just checked out your corpse makeup and you're definitely super pale!

It really is so odd to see your skin looking not so red when you're used to always seeing it have at least a little underlying redness.

Connie De Alwis said on November 14, 2008 at 12:16 PM

thanks for the rec! I think mauve would look nice since I have some problem with dullness.

mayaari said on November 14, 2008 at 5:17 PM

I just got this in my Sephora haul this week, and I knew the scent was familiar - Pert Plus! I have the green primer as well, and the color and smell honestly remind me of the shampoo that was always in the shower :) I'm thinking about exchanging it for the mauve primer to brighten my skin a bit, but I still have a little redness on my cheeks.

*Jen* said on November 15, 2008 at 10:38 AM

You're very welcome Connie! If you end up checking these out I'd love to hear your thoughts. I'm a pretty big fan myself =P

*Jen* said on November 15, 2008 at 10:45 AM

hey mayaari!

it took me a few moments to place the scent. i was just thinking "OMG this smells soooo familiar!"

i think that regardless of the color any one should be at least decent for helping with redness if you wear foundation on top since the foundation seems to grip on so well to the primer and to give better coverage!

~Lisa said on September 26, 2009 at 9:46 PM

Wow I really do see a difference in redness and texture with this product. And I also think there's the slightest little bit of green tone on your skin afterwards.

A Beautyful Sentiment (*Jen*) said on September 27, 2009 at 9:17 PM

Lisa I could never quite decide if the primer looked green or if it was my imagination!

Anonymous said on November 24, 2009 at 9:06 PM

My face is not bad when it's cool but as soon as I enter a heated room, it gets really red.
Will this primer prevent my face from getting red? Or does it only cover red blemishes. I'm not sure how it works and I really would like to try it. Thanks.

A Beautyful Sentiment (*Jen*) said on December 2, 2009 at 2:01 PM

Hey Anonymous!

I don't think this primer will prevent your face from getting red because it's overly warm - it's probably better for concealing underlying redness in the skin or minor blemishes. For a better red solution, I'd say try out the Guinot cream I reviewed somewhere on the blog, it's worked wonders for me.
